#8 - 2.1 Contextualizing Period 2

The first lecture of the unit provides background for all of the major events in the second historical period. It explains the context for the colonization of North America between 1607 to 1754. #9 - 2.2 European Colonization

This lecture covers European Colonization more deeply and explains how and why various European colonies developed and expanded from 1607 to 1754. The notes packet includes short answer practice and two primary source documents. One is a report from Spanish officials in California and the other is a French map of North America.

#10 - 2.3 The Regions of the British Colonies

This lecture explains how and why environmental and other factors shaped the development and expansion of various British colonies that developed and expanded from 1607 to 1754. It uses the broad categories of Southern, Middle and New England to describe the colonies. The notes packet includes short answer practice , a primary source on life in Boston and a secondary source on religion in New England.

#11 - 2.4 Transatlantic Trade

This lecture covers the causes and effects of transatlantic trade over time. The notes packet includes short answer practice as well as practice for writing a thesis and context in an introduction paragraph.

#12 - 2.5 Interactions Between American Indians and Europeans

This lecture explains how and why interactions between various European nations and American Indians changed over time. Per the key concepts, it focuses more heavily on the relations between Spanish and British with American Indians. The notes packet includes short answer practice and more practice for writing a thesis and context in introduction paragraph.

#13 - 2.6 Slavery in the British Colonies

This lecture explains the causes and effects of slavery in the various British colonies. The notes packet includes short answer practice, various examples of runaway slave ads and a secondary source titled “The Origins of Slavery.”

#14 - 2.7 Colonial Society and Culture

This lecture explains how and why the movement of a variety of people and ideas across the Atlantic contributed to the development of American culture over time. The notes packet include short answer practice, and primary sources that cover the Salem Witch Trials, a sermon by Jonathan Edwards, and John Locke’s “Two Treatises on Government.”

#15 - 2.8 Comparison in Period 2

The final lecture of the historical period focuses on the main historical thinking skill from the unit, comparison. It asks students to compare the effect of the development of colonial society in the various regions of North America. The notes packet includes short answer practice, context writing practice and a secondary source on colonization in the period.
