This lecture explains the context in which the United States faced international and domestic challenges after 1980. It provides background for all the major events in the last historical period. #100 - 9.2 Reagan and Conservatism

This lecture explains the causes and effects of continuing poly debates about the role of the federal government. It describes how Reagan’s presidency attempted to decrease the size of the government and how social conservatism also played a part into his ideology. The notes packet includes short answer writing practice and three primary sources. The first is an excerpt from Reagan’s first Inaugural Address in which he expresses his conservative political ideology. The second is an open letter by Jerry Falwell titled “The Homosexual Revolution” which gives an example of the social conservatism of the era. The last document is a speech by Pat Buchanan at the 1992 Republican Convention in which both the political and social conservative ideologies blend together.

#101 - 9.3 The End of the Cold War

This lecture explains the causes and effects of the Cold War and its legacy. It describes the decline of the Soviet Union through Gorbachev’s reforms and the various ways that the US put more pressure on its rival. The notes packet includes short answer practice, an excerpt of Reagan’s “Tear Down This Wall” speech, and a secondary source which describes the disconnect between Americans and the rest of the world on who they believe was responsible for ending the Cold War.

#102 - 9.4 A Changing Economy

This lecture explains the causes and effects of economic and technological change in the period 1980 to the present. It describes the major new technologies that came about in the period and establishes context for the major economic challenges of the future. The notes packet includes short answer practice and two primary sources that are speeches given by Bill Clinton before signing major legislation that approves the North American Free Trade Agreement, and eases New Deal-era restrictions in the financial industry.

#103 - 9.5 Migration and Immigration in the 1990s and 2000s

This lecture explains the causes and effects of domestic and international migration over the course of the historical period. The migration to the sun belt and the rise of undocumented migration are the biggest developments covered in the lecture. The notes packet includes short answer writing practice and an essay on American immigration policy that targets Mexican migrants. In the activity, students have to deconstruct the argument of the historian.

This lecture explains the causes and effects of the domestic and international challenges the United States has changed in the 21st century. Bush’s State of the Union Address from 2002.

#105 - 9.7 Causation in Period 9

This lecture ties the major events of the historical period to their corresponding effect. The notes packet includes short answer writing practice and a primary source document; an excerpt from Chelsea Manning’s request for a pardon for her part in leaking US classified information about US actions in the Middle East.
